Students at South East High School anticipate Fifa World Cup 2010

By Christopher Casillas
And Oscar Basurto

The FIFA World Cup only occurs every four years. In 2010 followers will be able to attend another world cup. Teams from every corner of the globe will play in this tournament. There have been 19 world cups so far, but the World Cup of 2010 will be the 20th. Every soccer fan eagerly await the start.
Fifa is one of the most entertaining tournaments in the world for soccer fans. According to the World Cup History Organization, “The first World Cup ever organized was in 1930 in Uruguay. At that time only 13 teams’ participated and now 32 teams participate. Uruguay was the first to have won the cup.” The World Cup was canceled in 1942 and 1946 due to the World War 2.
There are teams like Denmark, Mexico, Holland, Brazil, and Argentina that play well. There are players like Cristano Ronaldo from Portugal, Wayne Rooney from England, Fernando Torres from Spain, Lionel Messi from Argentina, and Frank Ribery from France. The World Cup of 2010 will be an amazing tournament and will bring people from other countries together to support their nation.
The World Cup of 2010 will take place in South Africa. There will be many stadiums including Soccer City and Ellis Park in Johannesburg which are important because of their size and location. The stadiums in South Africa are world class. All of the stadiums will have a capacity of over 40,000. According to FIFA, “There will be 10 stadiums available for the World Cup of 2010. These stadiums are Green Point with capacity of 70,000, Durban 70,000, Ellis Park 61,000, Soccer 94, 700, Free State 48, 000, Nelson Mandela 48,000, Mbombela 46,000, Peter Mokaba 46, 000, Royal Bafokeng 42, 000, and Loftus Versfeld 50,000.
Mr. Marangopoulos, an Algebra teacher at South East high School, said, “The Government of South Africa did a good job in making the big and nice stadiums, hotels and resorts”. By doing such things more people will visit and would want to stay longer. The stadiums, hotels, and resorts aren’t why people really want to come to see. They want to come to see the beautiful game play that soccer offers.
People from all over the globe will go to South Africa or watch the games from their home. With teams such as Holland, England, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and France playing each other will create a spectacular game. Marangopoulos said, “I really like Greece because I grew up there, but I would have to say that Holland is the best team of all because there from of playing and their ability of scoring goals.” There are teams like Algeria, Slovakia, and Slovenia that haven’t made it in a world cup for over 50 years or never in their history make it to one.
Others think differently. Cuauhtémoc Cibrian, a freshman at SEHS says England has the best team because of their high winning rate and the way each player treats the ball. The teams make up the tournament but the players make up the team.
There are thousands of hundreds of soccer players around the world and the best of each country gets called to their selection. There are some players that are good such as Frank Ribery from France, Thierry Henry from France, Fernando Torres from Spain, Karim Benzema from France, Cristano Ronaldo from Portugal, and Andres Iniesta from Spain. All of these players are the stars in their selection. Mr. Marangopoulos said, “I love the way Ronaldinho from Brazil because he runs fast, good ball control, he is an amazing finisher, and he is never afraid to pass the ball.” Cibrian said, “Giovani Dos Santos is a great player because he has good dribbling and ball control. There are always some soccer players that are better than others such as these that were mentioned. Soccer players make teams look good.
The World Cup proves which team is the best. When a country wins the cup it is something that will never be forgotten by the players and there fans. Soccer fans want the World Cup to start and they want their team to be the best and beat the rest.

Obesity Makes the World Heavy

By Christopher Casillas
Teens now eat more than before. There are many teens that are suffering from obesity, and its becoming something doctors are worried about.
Alexis Casillas, an 18-year old South Gate resident, first encountered obesity when he was 8-years old. His obesity continued all the way through middle school. Casillas said he felt depressed because he felt left out of physical activities. He lost weight through the 9th grade. Casillas wished that he could have lost weight when he was younger. He is still thankful for losing all that weight. Casillas said, “I didn’t want to have health problems in the future and now I am 18-years old and out of high school and I am proud I lost weight when I was younger”.
Obesity is a huge problem for teens. Wangsness M. from PubMed said,“In the past physicians didn’t know how obesity was cured so they would give dangerous drugs such as Thyroid Hormone and Exogenous that affect the human body”. Even though they had dangerous medicine in the past people becoming obese has grown. “Now the youth are considered the most unhealthy generation in history because their poor eating habits and poor inactivity,” according to Americas Fit Organization. Obesity is a problem for teens because it affects the future and it creates health issues. It is important for teens to take care of themselves so they won’t suffer in the future.
There are many reasons why kids become obese. Some teens become obese because they find comfort in eating so they over-eat, and they spend most of their time watching television, playing video games, and they use the computer more than they exercise. According to Kids Health Organization, “Teens spend 4 or more hours in front of the TV everyday when they are only supposed to watch 1 to 2 hours a day. The lack of exercise isn’t the only reason kids are obese. Kids Health Organization said, “Teens should exercise everyday for 30 minutes or more”. Now kids also tend to eat more than before. Now that there is food available everywhere kids can eat whenever they want. For example, McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and many more have food that is very fattening. Burger King’s hamburgers have 500 to 1600 calories and their fries have 400 to 600 calories, when teens are only supposed to have 1500 to 2000 calories. This one meal then equals 3 pleasant meals a day. Eating this much can cause problems for anyone.
Obesity is a disease that is very dangerous. Mariles Kalam, the nurse at South East High School, said, “Obesity can lead to many different chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart problems, and cancer”. As children grow they will start having difficulty living their life normally. According to the Kids Health Organization, “Most adults that are suffering from obesity right now, 25% of them were overweight or obese when they were a child. Some diseases like cancer can be treated, but it will never fade away.
Something that all overweight and obese people suffer is from depression. Casillas said, “Obese teens become depressed because they are unhealthy and they have to pay all their medical bills which make them nervous and mad which leads to depression”. That is why doctors and professionals want kids to lose weight when they are younger because they don’t want them to suffer of more severe medical problems when they are older. “Kids here in the United States aren’t the only ones suffering of obesity it’s everywhere” said Kalam.
Obesity is something awful, but there are solutions. Casillas said, “I lost weight by doing a lot of exercise and by eating less. According to Procor Organization kids should have 3 normal meals a day. Teens should have less time playing video games and more time running. Teens can be on a team of any sport they like. Overweight teens should try losing weight as much as possible by doing little things such as walking the stairs instead of taking the elevator or stop eating snacks. It is important for obese teens to lose weight before they become adults so they won’t suffer later in life.
For better health it is important that obese teens realize that they are in trouble. Being obese is a really big deal; there are some really dangerous consequences of being obese. Casillas said, “Being obese is of the worst feelings someone can have”.

Lockers Leave Students Depressed

What is wrong with the PE and outside lockers at South East High School?

Bryan Villanueva, a freshman at SEHS, said, “At South East High School there is a problem with lockers, there aren’t enough and they are too small”. Villanueva has a locker now, but it is jammed and he can’t use it until they fix it. Villanueva wants the school to get new lockers.

Villanueva said, ” Yes, we should get new lockers because they are very small, dirty, and there aren’t enough for everyone”. There are about 3,000 students at SEHS and 3,000 lockers, but half of the lockers don’t open. But where are the lockers needed is in the gym and outside.

Villanueva said, “[They’re more necessary outside because it’s closer to class]. Villanueva also stated “In 9Th grade it has been tiring because he has to carry all of his books and [he is] tired of taking his books to a class when he doesn’t need them. In this situation his grades might worsen.

Villanueva said, “This will affect my grade because I might forget to take my book to school or my book can be lost”. The lockers are needed now.

Villanueva said, “The lockers are needed now because I can’t wait any longer and I am tired of carrying my books all the time”. If they fix his locker he will be proud.

Villanueva said, “I will be happy and excited because I can finally have a locker to leave my books when I don’t need them anymore and I will feel safe because I won’t have to worry of forgetting my book somewhere”.
Ifath Casillas, a junior at SEHS, has been having problems with her locker and until now the school hasn’t fixed it.
Casillas said, “I think we should get new lockers because there aren’t enough lockers for everyone, there to small, they are stinky, and most of them don’t even work. There are problems especially with the gym lockers.
Casillas said, “The new lockers are necessary in the gym because they are very small and there aren’t enough lockers for everyone”. With this happening peoples grades lower.

Casillas said, “It will change the student’s grades because the gym is always crowded and all the things the students have won’t be able to fit in the locker” . If the school does get new lockers the kids will be able to dress freely without being squashed and they won’t have to share with someone anymore. Putting in new lockers in the gym is necessary.
Casillas said, “This is something the school should consider because kids have back injuries and they’re losing their books”.
Casillas said, “I will be glad and excited to have new lockers because I won’t have to take my books everywhere I go and worry of losing my books”.
It seems that everyone doesn’t have a locker. Many kids are don’t have a locker and when they get one it doesn’t open. The schools can’t get new lockers because of budget cuts, but getting new lockers are really necessary

Oscar Basurto's Dream(GOSS)

Oscar Basurto a freshman from Southeast High school wants to become a professional basketball player.

Oscar has a dream of becoming a basketball pro when he comes out of high school. There is a problem Basurto isn’t in shape. In basketball you need to be healthy because there’s a lot of running. If he isn’t in shape they won’t even bother to get him in the team.

Basurto has a solution. He said “starting from this day I am going to work out like crazy”. He also said “that he is going to get in an extreme diet”. This dream started since he was in elementary. And one of these days Oscar hopes this dream becomes true and becomes one of the best Basketball players in the NBA.

Farewell to The Summer of Ricardo Garcia

Ricardo had a awsome summer vaction. He went to many places he 's never visited in his life. He also met family members he has never seen before. His first destination was Guatemala, he never thought he was going to go to Guatemala. He visit a really nice hotel and he also visit the mayan pyriamids and explored the guatemalan junges. Ricardo mostly never spent his time in the hotel he would always be exploring the out doors. The only reason he would go in the hotel is to sleep and to eat. In the outdoors he saw some pretty intrusting things, he saw a monkey, and and saw a tree that he has heard of before, but he saw it in live. That tree he saw was acctually a tree that people in that area use for treating cancer and helps when people are stomach sick. When he saw the monkey he thought he was going to be attacked, but he like that he saw a monkey. That was all to his adventure to Guatemala. When he came back he went to six flages and raging waters. Garcia's vacation was over it was time to start to get ready for school. In my opinion his vacation sounces very fun and exciting. This was one's of ricardo's best vacation. This will be on his memories for ever.
